Coach Ed, Lead Assistant Chess Coach

Ed Havaich is a lifelong resident of Mahoning Valley.   Born and raised in Niles, OH Ed graduated from Niles McKinley in 1971 and is a Viet Nam “era” vet.  He served 4 years in the US Navy aboard the USS Pensacola LSD 38.

After an Honorable Discharge in 1975, he worked for the General Electric Company for 32 years and retired in 2008.  Ed learned to play chess in the 7th grade.  His love for the game never left him as he grew.  Chess fascinated and attracted him because of the logic of game.

As he matured, he soon observed many life applications that mirrored principles he learned from playing chess.   For Ed, chess is a place where an elephant can take a bath or a gnat can drink.   This game offers everyone of interest something.  It will take you as far as you want to go.  Chess is a well with no bottom.

Today Ed wants to introduce others to the Royal Game and all cerebral treasures it can unleash.
